Circular Economy Hub is pleased to announce an official partnership with REVOLVE Circular (Viena, Austria, CEO: Sören Bauer), a non-profit organization that works to raise awareness on the circular economy with constructive journalism.
In the official partnership, Circular Economy Hub participates in the world’s first global circular economy perception survey “Imagine Circularity.” On March 15, Circular Economy Hub and REVOLVE Circular launched the Japanese language version of the survey and invited all interested stakeholders in Japan to imagine their circular economy.
Participation in the world’s first global circular economy perception survey
The initiative started in April 2021 and was co-created by REVOLVE Circular and the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University in the Netherlands. “Imagine Circularity” educates participants on the basic principles of a circular economy and presents questions for which there is no right or wrong answer.
About Imagine Circularity

Survey deadline:April 19, 2022
Main survey component:
- Value Retention Options – also known as the circular economy’s ‘how-to-do’s, R strategies, or ‘action imperatives.’
- Circular economy definitions for participants to choose their preference. (4 alternatives)
- Various concepts and schools of thought at the origin of circularity.
Background of the release of the Japanese version
The answer to the question “What is a circular economy?” depends on who you ask. There are no correct or incorrect definitions of the circular economy because the emerging paradigm has not been standardized yet. Therefore, the global survey initiative “Imagine Circularity” is conducted with the aim of better understanding the different tendencies and how people around the globe imagine and perceive such a circular economy. The organizations behind the initiative are confident that the survey results will contribute to accelerating the transition towards the circular economy because it encourages people to think differently and imagine their own future.
While the initiative was developed as a survey, it is also an educational tool that
allows students and others to acquire knowledge of the circular economy through
its questions and the possible answers. The survey takes about 15 minutes and one
of its purposes is to broaden the awareness of the respondents and provide a new
perspective.
By participating in this survey initiative, the Circular Economy Hub in Japan hopes to compare domestic and international perceptions of the circular economy. Against this background and purpose, Circular Economy Hub has set the following goals:
- Contribute to improving the knowledge and understanding of respondents and increasing literacy regarding the circular economy in Japan.
- Conduct the survey that includes three major questions and one open question (optional) that can be answered in about 15 minutes.
- Contribute to getting one million respondents worldwide.
- Recognize the response characteristics by attribute.
The survey deadline is April 19, 2022, while the survey method and question items can be further improved in view of a second survey period after the deadline. The survey results will be announced on the Circular Economy Hub from time to time, and global results will be presented in mid-June 2022.
Official launch ceremony of the Japanese version
Circular Economy Hub is organizing an online event, “Imagine Circularity Japanese version launch ceremony: Essence of the circular economy explored from 4 types.” Martin Calisto-Friant of Utrecht University, one of the organizers of this survey, is invited to present his work during the ceremony.
