Theme for May 2023 features Europe’s regulatory trends in circular economy
The theme for this month is “Delivered from Europe! Regulatory trends in circular economy from EU, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.” *Due to popular demand, we have increased the number of seats available.
The EU and its member states, which can be regarded as the driving force behind the circular economy, have announced various circular economy policies (regulations) in recent years. In 2015, the EU launched the “Circular Economy Package,” positioning the circular economy as an industrial policy. In March 2020, the European Commission announced a new Circular Economy Action Plan for the Circular Economy transition. Prior to that, in December 2019, the European Green Deal was published, setting this action plan as the main pillar of the European Green Deal.
In Japan, both the public and private sectors are accelerating their efforts toward the Circular Economy transition. In May 2020, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) formulated the Circular Economy Vision 2020, and in March 2023, it formulated the “Growth-oriented Resource-autonomous Economy Strategy” in order to materialize this vision. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) believes that the transition to a circular economy is an urgent issue in the world from the perspective of resource constraints, such as increasing global demand for resources and geopolitical risks, in addition to environmental constraints such as waste and climate change issues. In addition, the markets related to the circular economy are expected to expand significantly both domestically and internationally in the future.
In response to these global trends, in August 2022, Hach Europe published the “Circular Economy in Europe: Policy and Case Study Report 2022,” which summarizes the EU’s circular economy policies and case studies of policies and initiatives in the Netherlands, France, Germany, and the UK. In less than a year since the publication of the report, the EU and its member states have announced a number of new laws and bills related to the Circular Economy, and companies not only in Europe but also around the world, including Japanese companies operating in the European market, have been paying attention to these developments.
In this program, Circular Economy Hub and IDEAS FOR GOOD will report in detail on the latest legislation and regulations in the EU, Germany, France, and the Netherlands related to the Circular Economy with a focus on eco-design, how the industry perceives the legislation, and how it will affect Japanese companies.
