Since April 2021, Circular Economy Hub (in Japanese) has been holding the online monthly study program series “Circular X,” in which participants can learn about the future image of the circular economy in each industry and field.
The theme for August’s session is “How does the circular economy change relationships?”
This month’s theme is “How does the circular economy change relationships? From local areas to international relations, we discover how through the latest discussions.”
Regarding the recent, dizzying changes in international and domestic situations, it is important to comprehend the circular economy not only from an environmental perspective, including reducing environmental burden through recycling resources, but also as something that can impact things from a societal perspective, including labor markets and diversity, human rights and well-being.
In particular, it is indicated that until the circular economy can achieve relations between people and things, people and communities, as well as trade relations between countries, there is a possibility of various transformations to relationships. For example, in communities that are making the shift to a circular economy, enriching minds by sharing things and building connections, as well as changes in roles from “consumers” who only consume resources, to “prosumers” who use and produce resources, are valued. In international relations, it is indicated that there is a possibility of relationship transformations in various places, including redefining trade relations between high income countries and low to middle income countries.
Regarding efforts to accurately comprehend these issues, in the shift to the circular economy the roles of each organization and individual are questioned, which may lead to truly meaningful shifts.
Therefore, upon presenting the latest discussions on “Circular Economy and Societal Perspectives” at this month’s Circular X, we plan on focusing on the relationships between people as well as between countries, and to thoroughly delve into these issues.
