Circular Yokohama, Harch’s platform for accelerating the circular economy in Yokohama City, participated in the event “Hoshiten Fair 2022 PLAY!! HOSHITEN!!” which was held in front of Tennocho Station on the Sotetsu Line.
Workshops and markets where visitors could enjoy the charms of the Hoshiten Area
“Hoshiten Fair 2022 PLAY!! HOSHITEN!!” is a fair where visitors could enjoy the charm of the area called Hoshiten which surrounds Hoshikawa Station and Tennocho Station on the Sotetsu Line. The fair aims to further increase the appeal of the Hoshiten area based on the “Basic Agreement to Make the Hoshiten Area a More Charming Place” concluded by 4 organizations: Hodogaya Ward in Yokohama City, Sotetsu Urban Creates, Sotetsu Building Management, and Sagami Railway Company.
On the event day, there were 5 workshops and exhibition booths set up, none of which required a reservation to participate. A market was held where various stores set up shop, including stores for baked confectionaries, vegetables, coffee, as well as food trucks, with a focus on stores from Hodogaya Ward in Yokohama.
Circular Yokohama held product exhibition sales based on the theme of circular design, as well as workshops based on the theme of upcycling.

Plastic bottle lids transformed! Upcycling workshop
Plastic bottle lids transform into small objects. This was a workshop where visitors could see the entire plastic recycling process with their own eyes and experience it using their own bodies, based on the theme of “Upcycle = Recreating objects as something else, and creating new value.” Shonan Trading, a company active with their “Shonan Eco Project” which seeks to widen proper knowledge about recycling and increase people’s environmental awareness, also cooperated with Circular Yokohama in holding this workshop.

”Yokohama Circular Design Exhibition”: Sales booth with theme of circular design
Here we introduce some examples of products that were displayed at the Circular Yokohama sales booth.
”Hachi-Iku®︎” honey
Honey products created through the original environmental study program “Hachi-Iku®︎” by Seibu Landscape. This program gives people opportunities to further connect with the greenery of their local area through raising honeybees. In Yokohama City, program activities are expanding to America Yama Park in Naka Ward, Shinsugita Park in Isogo Ward, and 5 other locations in Kanagawa Prefecture.
Upcycled bags by Coco&K.
Coco&K.’s bags and small products are upcycled products created by the activities of the NPO Kilus Foundation, which makes efforts for environmental issues in the Philippines. Aluminum packs for juice are reused, and their efforts lead to improvements for environment, employment, and education related issues in the Philippines. The main branch is in Kohoku Ward in Yokohama.
Craft beer paper made with malt dregs
Craft beer paper is recycled paper made by mixing discarded malt dregs from the craft beer brewing process with craft paper. The waste is changed to paper products with value, and these efforts proceed with the cooperation of breweries and dining establishment companies, with the aim of realizing upcycling. Planned and developed by kitafuku, which is headquartered in Yokohama City.
Aquaponics (circular agriculture) home use kit
Aquaponics is a circular agriculture method in which fish, micro-organisms and plants create ecosystems by crossing aquaculture and cultivation. Aquaponics is headquartered in Yokohama. The company aims to change the state of existing agricultural and aquacultural production, distribution, and resource circulation by spreading aquaponics, and they are also contributing to the minimization of resources, the promotion of local production for local consumption, as well as the revitalization of local communities. At this booth, 2 new aquaponics products for home use were displayed, and were sold through reservations.
buøy craft products made with upcycled ocean waste
Buøy is a product concept for using discarded plastic ocean waste as materials and recreating that waste as beautiful traditional crafts. It features a unique manufacturing method where plastic of different materials and colors is mixed and molded. The product design company Techno Labo, which is headquartered in Yokohama’s Kanagawa Ward, plans, manufactures, and sells these products. On each product, the name of the area where the waste, now used as materials, was gathered is inscribed.
Circular Yokohama will continue to share information regarding sustainable efforts in Yokohama.
